Chapter Six

Bray walked across the pier, staring out at the crowded beach. This was the spot Catalina requested to meet, but he didn’t see any sign of her. He leaned on the railing and watched some children venture into the ocean. They laughed as they ran in and out of the crashing waves without a care in the world.

He propped his head up on his hand and sighed. She’d sounded frantic on the phone and implored him to meet her immediately. Fear crept over him. What happened to spook her in the few hours since they’d parted?

Of course, she’d seemed scattered earlier and even a little skittish, but maybe something else happened. He’d find out as soon as she showed up. Whenever that was.

“Hey,” a soft voice whispered behind him.

He turned around and met Catalina’s eyes. A ball cap covered her face and she wore dark sunglasses that looked too big for her.

“Hi,” he greeted.

“Can we get out of here?” she asked, glancing around as she shifted on her feet.

“Sure. Where do you want to go?” he wondered.

“Someplace quiet and indoors. Away from people,” she replied. “Anywhere really. I don’t care.”

Bray nodded and motioned toward the parking lot a few hundred yards away. “My car is over there.”

Catalina nodded, ducked her head down and started toward his silver car. Bray scratched the back of his head as he trotted to catch up to her. Clearly she was in a hurry. But why? It was about time he got answers.

The beautiful she-wolf let herself into his car and buckled in as she waited on him. Bray ducked inside and started the car.

“Where to?” She said anywhere, but he still needed some sort of destination. He didn’t have enough gas to drive aimlessly.

“The police showed up at my apartment. They found my clothes. I can’t go home,” she stated.

“You couldn’t have just said it was a misunderstanding? You’re going to have to figure out a few lies,” he suggested.

“I...” she huffed and looked out the window. “I...I didn’t think about that,” she stammered.

“It’s okay. I’ll take you back and we can smooth things over and—”

“No,” she cut him off.

“No?” he questioned.

“I can’t go back. The police,” she stopped and pursed her lips. “You told me to call if I needed anything. Can’t I just lie low at your place for a few days?”

“Why are you running from the police?” he questioned as he pulled onto the freeway. He hadn’t intended to be nosy, but if she was going to come back to his home, with his family, then he needed to know the truth. He wouldn’t put his family in jeopardy.

“I’m not,” she said stubbornly.

“I’m not stupid,” Bray scoffed. “I saw how you acted at the diner this morning. Now you’re telling me you can’t go back because the police are at your house. What’s going on?” he questioned again.

“It’s none of your business,” she snapped. “Just let me out here. I’ll figure it out on my own.”

“I didn’t say I wouldn’t help,” he backtracked.
